FLOW PHOTO EXHIBITION TOUR

NATIONAL WATERWAYS MUSEUM LIVERPOOL
30 March - 30 May 2019

GLOUCESTER MUSEUM

6 June - 13 July 2019
Following a call for entries which saw the submission of over 500 photographs and films, 29 photographs by 24 artists were selected for exhibition. From sleepy, semi-mystical riverbanks swathed in early morning mist, to the industrial belly of some of the UK’s biggest cities, cut through with canals that perfectly mirror their surroundings, inverting the world in their surfaces. From aerial views of vein-like rivers lacing their way through the landscape, to long-exposure shots which compress the daily activity that takes place in, on and around a river into a single, explosive image, the inaugural Flow Photo exhibition provides an insight into the many moods and manifestations of water and canals across the UK. My photograph 'Rivulet' (2018) was selected and exhibited.

CERBERE, BELVEDERE DU RAYON VERT

Belvedere Du Rayon Vert in Cerbere, a commune in the Pyrenees-Orientales in southern France. The hotel was designed by Leon Baille in 1928. The railway alongside it is the mainline between Perpignan and Barcelona and it is here that that the rail gauges are adjusted as the trains move between France and Spain.

SMALL IS BEAUTIFUL

7 December 2016 – 7 January 2017

Flowers Gallery is delighted to announce the 34th edition of the annual Small is Beautiful exhibition, which will take place at the Cork Street gallery. Small is Beautiful, which was first established at Flowers Gallery in 1974, invites selected contemporary artists working in any media to present works with a fixed economy of scale, each piece measuring a maximum of 7 x 9 inches.

On display at the Cork Street gallery will be over 100 works, offering a rare opportunity to discover the work of lesser-known artists alongside internationally recognised names.

This year all of the works from Small is Beautiful will be available to purchase online for the first time, to mark the launch of Flowers Gallery’s new online store on 6 December, which will also feature a curated selection of limited edition prints.

INSIDE OUT
47 x 47cm, silk on linen
No. 668

‘Inside Out’ is part of a series of drawings and stitched works that I made from MRI images of the brain. The thoughts that rush through the brain during the procedure are exciting and unexpected. Cells might be proliferating or decaying and life could change. Although hidden by bone and skin and propelled from inside, the brain can now be visualised and mapped.

In this piece the stitching is shown from the underside of the material. The OOs from the word LOOK sewn on the top are decipherable but otherwise the threads appear chaotic and unreadable. In traditional embroidery there is always a sense of the other side of the material but it is usually only imagined. The underside reflected the top and was almost interchangeable but here it tells a different more direct story and the under working reveals the tangles and loose threads that remain, perhaps as memories, scars or slips.
